Spiders - what's the deal?

Here's some pictures of spiders sent to us by Jools Crory and Romy McKeever. Birds, butterflies, mammals and moths fine but we don't have a clue about spiders. As the first two were found in a house we making an educated guess that they're House Spiders. The last one was found in the Quoile Pondage hide .....it's probably a house spider too!

Aha! Thanks to Robert Nash for shedding some light on this - the middle picture is a Tegenaria species.
For anybody who wants to chase these up the following site has been recommended:

Progress - but I'm left with the same question - spiders what's the deal? Even the experts find them tough!
