Bird News Sunday 1st September

Ballymacormick Point had a Little Gull, a Whimbrel, a Red-throated Diver and a Common Scoter. Yesterday a White Wagtail was at Anne's Point in Strangford Lough. (Richard Weyl).

This evening a Peregrine was hunting over Castlewellan beach, see picture below. (Alistair Prentice).

At Malin Head from 9am - 11am 6 Arctic Skua went west, at Myroe Levels mid afternoon a flock of 5 Arctic Skua flew up Lough Foyle, at Magilligan Point a single Arctic Skua flew close inshore into the lough Other birds at Malin in gale force WSW winds included 9 Great Skua and 28 Sooty Shearwater. At Strangford Lough 180 Pale-bellied Brent and 400 Redshank were at the Floodgates (Dot Blakely).

At Larne Lough 4 Greenshank, a first-winter Mediterranean Gull, Sanderling, 52 Dunlin, Little Egret and 4 Knot were at Ballycarry Bridge (Cameron Moore).


A seawatch from 8.30 - 10.00 this morning at Melmore in Donegal had 10 Pomarine Skua, 9 Great Skua, 5 Arctic Skua, 15 Sooty Shearwaters and a Common Scoter. Another short seawatch of 30 minutes from 2.30 showed Sooty Shearwaters still passing along with 2 Great Skua and 1 more Pomarine Skua. (Eric Randall).
