Bird News Tuesday 31st August

The adult Bonapartes Gull was still at Kinnegar Shore this morning at 8:45 (Ronald Surgenor). It was also seen at 1pm at Kinnegar, flying in to the Sewage Works. (Michael Latham).

Two juvenile Little Stints, 3 juvenile Curlew Sandpipers, 10 Ruff and 4 Sanderling were at RSPB Belfast Lough WoW reserve this afternoon. (Stuart McKee).

A Purple Sandpiper was between Ramore Head and the Countryside Centre in Portrush. (Juliet Fleming).

Bird News Monday 30th August

The Bonaparte's Gull is at Kinnegar Shore at 1:40 (Bob Watts). It is at RSPB WoW at 7:45pm. (Gerard McGeehan)

RSPB WoW this morning had a Curlew Sandpiper and 2 Sanderling. Another Curlew Sandpiper and a Knot were at Kinnegar (Bob Watts) There were also 10 Ruff and about 70 Dunlin present at RSPB WoW. (Tom Ennis).

This morning 2 Whimbrel, 3 Greenshank and a high count of 230 Red-breasted Merganser were at Glynn (Ian Enlander)

Little Stint seen at Kinnegar, Bonaparte's Gull seen but distant.(Kevin Kirkham). 

At least one Garganey was on Lough Beg this afternoon, also a Great White Egret on the western shoreline. The 2nd-winter Little Gull, 25 Ruff (22 juvenile) and 3 White Wagtails were at Mullagh. (David Steele)

At Burial Island this morning there were 2 Arctic Skua, 2 Red-throated Diver and 10 Common Scoter. (Richard Weyl)

An adult Bonapartes Gull is at RSPB WoW at 17:45, the two juvenile Curlew Sandpipers and five Sanderling were also present. A Whimbrel was at Kinnegar shore. (Stuart McKee)

At John’s Point, Co Down had a Great Northern Diver, 6 Common Scoter, and a Minke Whale (Michael Latham).

Bird News Friday 27th August

An adult and juvenile Roseate Terns were at Ballyholme beach this morning, an adult and juvenile Mediterranean Gulls were also present. (James Andrew).

7 Goosander (inc at least 5 juv) were at Ballykelly river mouth this morning. Also present were 6 adult  Mediterranean Gulls, and 6 Knot (Richard Gray)

5 Ruff are at the pool next to Kearney Village (Dermott Hughes)

9 Ruff, a single Whimbrel and a Sanderling were at Belfast Lough RSPB WoW this afternoon. (Garry Armstrong).

The 2nd year Little Gull now moulted into winter plumage was at the Mullagh, Lough Beg. 6 juvenile Ruff were also present. (David Steele).

Red Kites at Avoca and Glendalough - Coach Trip

Red Kites at Avoca and Glendalough, Saturday 18 September 2021

A coach trip to Avoca, Wicklow to see Red kites will take place on Saturday 18 September. The coach will leave Sprucefield at 9am. The Glaucous Gull was still at the McDonalds / Premier Inn car park, Coleraine (Garry Armstrong)

The Green Sandpiper and two Wheatear were at Myroe (Gerard McGeehan / Shirley Dunlop)

RSPB Belfast wow had 4 Ruff, 5 adult and 1 juv Common Tern with high counts of 330 Oystercatcher, 380 Curlew, 210 Black-tailed Godwit and 12 Bar-tailed Godwit. Kinnegar had 90+ Ringed Plover and 1 Sanderling (Ian Enlander)

There were 3 Roseate Tern (2 adult and 1 juvenile) and 3 adult Mediterranean Gull at the east end of Ballyholme Beach. Another adult Roseate Tern and an adult Mediterranean Gull were at Seahill. (Richard Weyl)

Three Common Sandpipers were in Killough outer Harbour, a Green Sandpiper at the brickworks, single Blackcap and Whitethroat at the coastguard; in  Kelly’s Wood there was a single Stock Dove and Spotted Flycatchers. (Chris Murphy)

Bird News Wednesday 18th August

 A Sanderling was at Kinnegar shore. Circa 40 Dunlin were present, but no sign of the Little Stint (Bob Watts)

12 Whooper Swans were seen flying over Clabby, Co Fermanagh (David Hetherington)

Long Point, Lough Beg this morning had 2 Ruff, 2 Greenshank, 2 Wigeon and a Great Spotted Woodpecker. 18 Whoopers were also present, including 5 cygnets (Richard Gray)

There was no sign of the juvenile Little Gulls at Lough Beg but the 2nd calendar year Little Gull was still present along with a juvenile Arctic Tern, 3 Sanderling and 16 Ruff. (David Steele).

Three Little Gulls and a Garganey were at Lough Beg this afternoon. Ten Ruff were at Mullagh. (David Steele).

Melmore Head in Donegal this morning had a Pomarine Skua, 21 Sooty Shearwaters, 290 Manx Shearwaters, a Puffin and 3 Arctic Terns. Lough Beg from Long Point this evening had a juvenile Little Gull, 5 Ruff, 2 Black-tailed Godwit, a Wigeon, 10 Little Egrets and 12 Whooper Swans including a pair with a single cygnet. Yesterday Melmore Head between 0705-1150: had 7 European Storm Petrels, 1100 Manx Shearwater, 135 Sooty Shearwater, 1 Great Shearwater, 2 Sabine's Gulls and 2 Arctic Skua (Oscar Campbell)

A Sanderling is at Lady’s Bay, Lough Neagh (Chris Rankin).

Belfast Lough RSPB WoW reserve had a single Whimbrel and a female Wigeon this afternoon. (Garry Armstrong).

A Black Tern was seen at Whitehead at 5pm before flying up Belfast Lough (Cameron Moore)

A Pectoral Sandpiper is at the west end of Blanketnook, Donegal. A sub-adult Yellow-legged Gull was there yesterday (Derek Brennan)

A seawatch between 7am and 8:45am at Fanad Head had 69 Sooty Shearwater, 8 Storm Petrel and an Arctic Skua (Wilton Farrelly)

An Arctic Skua was off Castlerock (Richard Donaghey).

Two Red Kites were seen outside Banbridge. (Mike McLaughlin).

A summer plumaged Grey Plover 9 Greylag and a Peregrine were at Ballykelly Marsh. 12 Greylag and 2 Peregrine were at the Roe Estuary. (Martin Deehan).

Bird News Thursday 12th August.

Belfast WoW reserve  had circa 200 Curlews; similar numbers of Black-tailed Godwits; Circa 45 Bar-tailed Godwits; 1 Knot,  3 Ringed Plover; 1 juvenile Dunlin. (Tom Ennis/Tony Dodds).

Two Mediterranean Gulls and a Black-tailed Godwit were at the Ballyholme end of Ballymacormick Point. (James Andrew).

Bird News Wednesday 11th August

RSPB WoW had 5 Bar-tailed Godwit and a high count of circa 350 Curlew. A Mediterranean Gull was at Kinnegar Shore. (Bob Watts). This afternoon at high tide, 35 Bar-tailed Godwit and200 Black-tailed Godwit were present. There were however only 7 Dunlin. (Tom Ennis / Andrew Miller)

Bird News Tuesday 10th August

Two Mediterranean Gulls were at the Ballyholme entrance to Ballymacormick Point this morning. (James Andrew).

An adult Mediterranean Gull moulting into winter plumage was on the roof of the water treatment works at Kinnegar. (Kevin Kirkham)

A Common Sandpiper and 5 Greenshank were at Glynn (Gerard McGeehan / Shirley Dunlop).

A single Brent Goose, a Mediterranean Gull and a Greenshank were at Ballykelly marsh. Nine Greylags were in the fields by the marsh. (Martin Deehan).

An immature White-tailed Eagle was seen flying low, heading south over the Cherryhill / Dunlady Road area of Dundonald last night (Don, Linda and Natasha Scott)

A Great Skua passed Ramore Head this morning, a small flock of Purple Sandpipers where also present. (Stephen Riddell).

A Curlew Sandpiper was with 2 Common Sandpipers at Lady Bay, Lough Neagh this evening. (Nigel Moore).

A Common Sandpiper was outside the Croaghan hide at Oxford Island this morning. (Mark Killops).

In Donegal Melmore Head this morning had 35 Sooty Shearwater, 14 Great Skuas, 3 Storm Petrels, 10 Arctic Terns, 18 Whimbrel and 3 Puffin. Fanad Head this afternoon had 2 Sooty Shearwaters and 20 Storm Petrels. (Oscar Campbell).

 A summer plumaged Knot was roosting with the Curlews and Godwits at RSPB WoW reserve this morning. (Garry Armstrong).

Malin Head on the Inishowen peninsula in Donegal had 2 Peregrine, a Merlin, Kestrel, 2 Buzzard and 8 Chough. (Christine Cassidy, Dermot McLaughlin).

A Quail was calling from a crop field on Lomond Road on the way down to Myroe. (Oscar Campbell).

Myroe had 2 Peregrines and a juvenile Mediterranean Gull. Ballykelly Marsh had 8 adult, a 2nd year and a juvenile Mediterranean Gull, a Whimbrel and 3 Sanderling. (Oscar Campbell).

A juvenile Ruff and a summer plumaged Red-throated Diver were at Magilligan. (Oscar Campbell).

The Glaucous Gull was still at the Burger King car park in Coleraine. (Oscar Campbell).

4 male Ruff were at Lough Beg this evening. (Oscar Campbell).

 A Sanderling was with Dunlin at Kinnegar shore this morning. (Bob Watts).

The 1st summer Little Gull is still at Lough Beg, an eclipse male Garganey was in the south west corner. A Green Sandpiper was at Paddy's Dub. (David Steele).

A Roseate Tern was seen from the boat between Copeland Island and Bangor this afternoon. (Kevin Kirkham). 

Bird News Sunday 1st August

An Osprey was at Reedy Flats on the south shore of Lough Neagh, seen flying towards the Bann Foot, a Black-necked Grebe was also seen. (Oscar Campbell).

Yesterday a Roseate Tern was with Sandwich Terns in Dundrum Bay. 4 Common Scoter were along Murlough beach. (John Mathers).

4 Common Sandpipers were at Lady Bay, Lough Neagh,  there was no sign of the Green Sandpiper. (Ed O'Hara).

2 Greenshank were at Glynn in Larne Lough. (Dakota Reid).

5 Common Scoter were just off Seapark near Cultra in Belfast Lough. (Jennifer Martin).
