Bird News Sunday 5th March

The drake Smew was at Todd’s Corner, Lough Neagh (Ivan Quail)

The other drake Smew was at Gawleys Gate (Jeff Larkin)

A first winter Glaucous Gull is at Glassagh Bay, Fanad Head, Donegal (Wilton Farrelly)

Four Goosanders (Inc two males) are along the River Main at Slaght this morning. The Green Sandpiper (now into its ninth month) is also still present. (David Steele)

The 7 Russian White-fronted Geese are still at the east end of Reedy Flats, also a Barnacle Goose still there (Jeff Larkin)

A Great Spotted Woodpecker was at Helen’s Bay (John McClean). Another was visiting a garden close to Castle Park, Bangor (Alison Cairns)

The Green-winged Teal was still at Glynn this morning (Linda Thompson)

Four Ring-necked Duck (1 male, 3 female) were at Lough Fern, Co Donegal (Wilton Farrelly)

There was a calling Crossbill at Clonachullion Hill woods near Trassey Bridge in the Mournes this morning. (Daniel Barry and Tomas Lavelle)

The Glaucous Gull was still at Burger King, Coleraine. The Long-tailed Duck was still at Portstewart (Daniel Newton)

The three Waxwing were still in Ward Park, Bangor, behind the library.

It is now believed that the Lesser Scaup at Oxford Island yesterday is a hybrid.
